Ernst Yperlaan
IIn this era of unprecedented technological advancement, we seek balance through old techniques, nature, nostalgia, and spirituality. In a similar way, the work of Ernst Yperlaan offers an escape back to Romanticism, in the tradition of Dutch landscape painters, with a touch of magical realism.
In his series Amsterdam Cityscapes, he follows a long tradition of capturing the beauty of the city. Outside the built environment, the sense of time is often defined by people, clothing, advertising and traffic signs, or modes of transport. In Ernst’s works, these locations are stripped of much of this time-bound noise, along with the human elements and symbols of our consumer society. This creates a timeless estrangement, allowing the Amsterdam locations to regain the iconic radiance they deserve, resulting in a subtly magical-realistic vision of seemingly familiar Amsterdam clichés.
